What Is a Wind Power Co-op?

A co-operative is a democratically controlled business enterprise.

Members work together to meet their individual and collective needs. Each member has a say in how the business is run.

WindShare is a structured as a community-based co-operative. WindShare was founded by members and employs the skills, knowledge and resources of people in the GTA community to conduct its business, including planning approvals, environmental reporting, engineering studies and fundraising. WindShare members put their own energy into every step of project development for the Ex Place turbine.

The Canadian Co-operative Association reports that there are over 10,000 co-ops and credit unions in Canada, providing housing, financial services, insurance, agricultural products, child care and other services to 10 million Canadians.

Several members indicated their decision to invest in WindShare grew out of concern for air quality issues and climate change their desire to participate in the demonstration of the viability of wind power as a solution.

The “green” electrons produced by the turbine go into the Ontario Power Grid. Members receive an annual dividend payment for the power that their turbine produces.
